Will I Dream?

Will I Dream?

"Will I dream?" echoes the question asked by HAL in 2010: the last question of a sentient computer as it faces death. The question has importance to humans as well from two angles. First, is there something after death to look forward to (or to dread)? The question is unanswerable. Anyone who truly knows the answer is not in a position to pass on the information. But all the same, wars have been fought over various interpretations of this and related questions as long as Man has been able to wield weapons. Even today, there are days where hundreds die in conflicts with roots in these questions. The question also has meaning in another context. Can we build machines which are capable of sentience, capable of dreaming, capable of asking the question "will I dream?", and perhaps capable of fighting wars over interpretations of that question? And, if we can, should we? Will we?

Will I dream? I don't know.
